FINDLAY CITY SCHOOLS BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING MINUTES

February 22, 2021

The Findlay City Schools Board of Education met February 22, 2021 in regular session at 6:00 p.m. at Glenwood Middle School and via teleconference. President Siebenaler Wilson called the meeting to order. Present were Mr. Aldrich, Mr. Cooper, Ms. Eier, Mrs. Russel, Dr. Siebenaler Wilson, Treasurer Mr. Hammond, Assistant Superintendent Mrs. Miller, and Superintendent Mr. Roth.

2021-002-001 READING, APPROVAL, AND SIGNING OF MINUTES

It was motioned by Mrs. Russel, seconded by Mr. Aldrich to approve the Regular Meeting Minutes from January 25, 2021.

CELEBRATIONS

Mr. Roth welcomed everyone to the February 22, 2021 Board of Education meeting. Mrs. Russel celebrated Jefferson’s All-A Award for the second year in a row and Jacob’s “Kid Whisperer” program and all it’s done for Jacob’s. Mr. Cooper celebrated the Donnell band on recording their concert and distributing to parents to listen to since they have been unable to perform a live concert this year. Also, Donnell science classes are back doing hands on labs and the 7th graders continue their outreach program and are raising funds for the Humane Society this year. He also celebrated Whittier students and staff on the amazing job with their Wax Museum this year even with it being virtual. Mr. Cooper also recognized Findlay First Edition for being named Grand Champions at the Marion Singsational and thanked Pam Hamlin, Justin Shank, and Meg Simon for having him in their buildings to talk with staff and enjoy cookies and muffins. He also celebrated Freshman Basketball for going 19-0 and winning a TRAC title and for the Varsity Basketball team for earning a share of the TRAC title. Mr. Aldrich celebrated Bigelow Hill continuing with The Big Shake this year and to be on the look-out for additional information prior to the week of March 15th. He also celebrated the Varsity Hockey Team for winning their first round of tournament play against St. Johns. Ms. Eier visited Chamberlin Hill, Lincoln and Washington and dropped off a little Valentine’s treats for the staff. Dr. Siebenaler Wilson celebrated, on behalf of Meg Simon, the staff and students at Glenwood Middle School for following protocols which allowed for a smooth transition when they returned to in-person learning. Also, the week of March 1st – March 5th was School Counselor Appreciation Week and Mrs. Simon wanted to thank Stefan Adams and Kyle Hackeburg for being the 2 best school counselors and she feels blessed to have them on her team. She expressed her appreciation for all the counselors do for the staff, students and community. Dr. Siebenaler Wilson also recognized Millstream students and celebrated their hard work in preparing for their SKILLS competition beginning the week of March 8th and running through March 12th. Mr. Roth thanked all the Board members for visiting schools and expressed the appreciation the principals and staff feel when a Board members visits. He also recognized Trisha Klausing and Becky Solomon for providing and training first responders with sensory boxes for assisting individuals with autism. Mr. Roth also congratulated Mark Dickman and We the People for winning their 29th State Championship out of the last 34 State Competitions. Mr. Roth celebrated the Findlay Rotary Foundation and the Golden Apple Academy Classroom Activity Grant that was awarded to Mark Shively, FHS:  $248.04 for an interactive electricity activity and to Jodi Smith, Donnell: $249.20 for building materials for a miniature golf course project. The Ohio Department of Education Office for Exceptional Children have awarded Findlay City Schools at $2000 Grant to support the work of the Parent Mentor as well as supporting the Parent Mentor’s relationships with families as shown in EXHIBIT A.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION

Justin Donat, a parent of an FCS student, expressed concern with the Boards decision to increase the walking distance, especially for K-5 students for the 2021-2022 school year. Susan Gabel, a grandparent of an FCS student, expressed concerns about the elementary students being reorganized and was hoping for summer school options this summer for students who may have fallen behind during the pandemic.

Mr. Roth provided the first reading of Policy 5.09: Walkers and Riders which increases the walking distance for K-5 students to 1 mile and for middle school students to 2.0 miles.

2021-002-005 OUT-OF-STATE TRAVEL

It was motioned by Mr. Cooper, seconded by Mr. Aldrich to approve out-of-state travel for the following:

  • 2021-2022 Concert Band Members and directors and 2021-2022 Marching Band students and directors to travel to Orlando, Florida April 13, 2022 – April 18, 2022 to perform and attend multiple band clinics.

REPORTS TO THE BOARD

Mrs. Renn and Mr. Steiner presented a mid-year progress report.

SUPERINTENDENTS COMMENTS

Mr. Roth mentioned the extended learning plan for the summer as discussed earlier. Additional information will be available by April 1st and presented at the March 22, 2021 Board of Education meeting. The vaccine clinic this Saturday will vaccinate over 500 employees. The district is waiting to hear from the State regarding year-end state testing and if it will be required. During the substitute hiring night we were able to hire 8 subs due to HB 409 and have also added 9 subs with bachelor’s degrees. The next Board meeting is March 22, 2021 at Glenwood Middle school. Mr. Roth thanked Mr. Weihrauch on his diligence in filling the FHS Varsity Head Football Coach position in a timely manner and congratulated Mr. Adams and is looking forward to all the great things he’s going to do for the football program.

BOARD COMMENTS

Mr. Aldrich wanted to congratulate Mr. Adams in becoming the new Varsity Football Coach. Dr. Siebenaler Wilson ask Mrs. Hamlin to discuss the MedTech students from Millstream that will be assisting with the vaccine clinic this weekend.

2021-002-012 EXECUTIVE SESSION

It was motioned by Ms. Eier, seconded by Mr. Aldrich to go into executive session at 7:05 pm to discuss upcoming negotiations and employment and compensation of personnel.
