FCS Cares Shout-Out!
April 2021
The 12th FCS Cares, Trauma-Informed Care inspired SHOUT-OUT goes to Michelle Cheney at Donnell Middle School!
Michelle Cheney embodies trauma informed care. She helps the students in the autism unit feel safe on a daily basis. She has a nurturing demeanor which helps the students feel loved even when they are experiencing breakdowns and may be lashing out. She helps to instruct the students in emotional regulation. Michelle provides security and predictability for the students who rely heavily on those things to feel safe. She recently began using essential oils, music and calm mindful thinking with a student in the room to help him with his emotions. It’s been very successful. She saw that he needed a way to calm his mind and brought her own materials in to help him in the classroom. That’s just one more way she’s CONSTANTLY thinking of her students. Impressively, this is Michelle’s first year working in this role but she has quickly become irreplaceable.
